South Africa faces a globally unprecedented problem of gender-based violence, which is undermining social and eco-nomic development, and is hindering the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. Interpol has recently la-belled South Africa as the rape capital of the world, because the country has the highest rape rate and one of the highest incidences of domestic violence in the world. This Strategy Insights (Social) provides a short overview of the state of gender-based violence (especially sexual violence and intimate partner violence) in South Africa in comparison to other countries, the factors associated with the increased risk of violence against women, and how it can be prevented.
Strategy insights consists of a monthly monitor series aimed at interpreting current issues relating to politics, education, economics, technology and the environment within a long-term context. These deal with and are distributed electronically every month.
