MPhil (Futures Studies)
During periods of stability decision-making is relatively simple, as change is reasonably predictable and established methods usually work. During times of turbulence, however, such as those the world, Africa and South Africa are experiencing at the moment and will continue to experience for many decades, rapid change is pervasive and the future becomes more and more uncertain and complex. The result is that old ways of thinking about the future no longer suffice.
Whether in the commercial world or in public services, the pace and complexity of the challenges facing organisations demand an approach to thinking about the future that is both creative and rigorous. The true challenge is to become a change-maker, not just a passive change-taker.
The MPhil (Futures Studies) serves the needs of individuals, groups, organisations and government departments that have to understand possible changes in their long-term future and respond accordingly.

You may ask, “What’s futures thinking and the future”? To many these are foreign concepts, to some they are just that, concepts. The MPhil at the Institute for Futures Research gives you the tools to root the future in your reality, yesterday, today or somewhere in the future.
